Description

Hand raised and finished from beaten sheet copper and brass. Of waisted from, the vessel is skilfully 'castle' or crimp seamed - brazed and burnished, (see images). This example incorporates a brass clad spout of scrolling form - possibly originally incorporating a hinged brass cover, enclosing the spout. The applied strap form copper handle incorporates the cover hinge fulcrum.
A pair of ornate square form rivets secure the hinge to the cover - a 'fanned' and pierced terminal embellishes the hinge extreme, with chain links suspended below. The stepped and raised circular cover is fully enclosed - the fluted ornate brass finial passes through the cover, riveted from below, (possibly originally extending upward, incorporating additional decorative elements). The cover has retained the original charcoal infill.
A brass collar below the opening is finished with chiseled decoration - embossed and chiseled decoration also embellishes the main cover and spout panelling. The surface has retained traces of selective tinning.
Size: height - 8 3/8" (213mm), max width - 7 3/4" (192mm).
Weight - 442 grams.
