Description
A scarce 'apira' ceremonial food bowl - used for offerings, also displayed during traditional gatherings and celebrations.
Hand carved from a single section of native Alstoiaa Scholars softwood, the bowl is of oval form, resting on an integral raised pedestal foot. The left and right extremes incorporate stylised Bonito fish, (detailed by the additional images).
The surface is darkened by a mixture of ground charcoal and natural plant resin. Inlaid bands of carved and shaped ''H" form Abalone shell motifs embellish the surface. Additional Abalone shell ornaments the Bonito fish.
Overall width - 22 5/8" (574mm), max height - 10 1/4" (260mm).
Weight - 1,283 grams.
Condition - Good. Old repair work and some timber losses to one of the fish, (detailed by the additional images). Good natural colour and patina.
