Description
This example was purchased from the same private UK collection as the larger brass betel box from Brunei - stock no. BA 1023, (combined shipping discount is available).Cast in two sections using the 'lost wax' process - hand tooled and finished. This heavy example is of octagonal lozenge form. A recessed lip to the base opening locates the hinged cover. The cover is heavily moulded at the edges and incorporates a raised central panel. Reeded decoration embellishes the box - cast above the base and below the opening.
The surface is skilfully finished with complex hand chiseled floral scrollwork and bands of geometric motifs. A 'greek key' motif forms a broad band of decoration at the panel edge.
Length - 8 1/4" (219mm), depth - 4" (101mm), height - 2 1/2" (64mm).
Weight - 945 grams.
Condition - Very Good. The usual minor casting flaws. Signs or genuine age and usage. No cracks or dents. No repairs. Fine natural colour and patina.
