This unusually large example is of rectangular form, finished with with rounded ends and incorporating a sliding pen tray - the tray closure of complex 'keyed' alignment. The external surface is finished with finely painted polychrome decoration, incorporating complex scrollwork, exotic birds and foliate motifs on an ivory ground. The tray is embellished with foliate motifs, also over an ivory and green ground. The layered paper (papier-mâché) construction is internally visible and incorporates layers of previously unused pulp-paper, (not old hand written manuscript). Length: 12 1/8" (308mm). Weight: 334 grams. Condition: Good. Some losses to the decoration and age related wear - consistent with usage and handling over a considerable period. No repairs. Natural colour and patina. Internal Ref: K 1034
