Sectionally cast in copper alloy (brass), this 'bird' form example is hand finished as a standing quail. The detailed 'feathered' section, forming quail's the 'wings', is located by a corresponding pin and socket arrangement. This outer 'cover' enclosing the interior of the hollow form censer. Incense, or pastile, would be ignited and placed within the censer - with the cover in place, the aromatic vapour would emerge from the open beak of the quail. No make's mark found - the form probably inspired by examples from the Edu period, by Tsmumura Kamejo. Overall height - 4 1/2" (115mm). Weight - 356 grams. Condition: Good. A drilled hole to the underside of the right foot, (possibly added to allow later mounting - not spoiling the appearance in any way, see images). Surface marks etc. associated with age and usage. No repairs. Natural colour and patina. Internal Ref: JA 1007
