Description

Cast in bronze, using the 'lost wax' process, this unusual Ikebana vase takes the form of a stylised sailing 'Junk'. The vessel is typically 'flat bottomed' and incorporates three integral cast lugs - one to the prow area and two at the stern. The lugs are mounted with the original hand constructed iron wire chain linkages. The chains couple at the upper extreme with the cast bronze suspension, (also original).
The prow is cast with a stylised 'rooster' form figurehead - the hull sides are cast with complex decoration of strong Chinese influence, incorporating taotie masks. The hull, 'below the waterline' is cast with barnacles, other crustaceans and molluscs - see final two images.
Overall height, suspended, (as image 2): 18 1/2" (460mm), length: 13 1/4" (337mm).
Total weight - 1,240 grams.
Condition: Very Good. No cracks or dents - no repairs. Fine original natural colour and patina.
Internal Ref: JA 1005
