Description
Produced totally by hand, using the traditional heddle type loom. This larger example has been created with lengths of carefully prepared and worked natural plane fibre. Rectangular in form, the panel incorporates a fringe to all four edges and is formed over a jointed double length warp / weft framework. The 'piled' front face incorporates a geometric four colour pattern - the repeating and interlocking hooked 'M' shaped motifs form a 'cubist' lattice, (the arts of the Kuba people proved a very strong influence on Picasso).Provenance: Collected during the 1950's & early 1960's by the previous owner, whilst working for the British diplomatic service in the Belgian Congo, (Zaire - now The Democratic Republic of Congo).
This example is one of ten Kuba textile "trade" panels from the same collection that I am currently offering for sale.
Size, (approx) - 19 1/2" (495mm) x 49 1/2" (1,257mm).
Condition: Good. Some signs of wear, (consistent with age). No repairs or reworking.
