Description

Carved and shaped from a carefully dried and hollowed natural gourd - the 'hard' shell of the gourd has proved to be the basis of vessels for thousands of years, used by the inhabitants of continents around the world.
This example incorporates an opening at the tapering upper extreme.
The surface is carved with a complex figurative scene, enveloping the entire surface area. Animals, birds and native characters clutching umbrellas, or parasols, are depicted interacting with each other and many of the native animals. Selective darkening to elements of the carved decoration contrasts with the natural 'orange' tone to the uncut, (raised), areas - the tooled work creates a 'show-through' of the lighter core colour.
Height, approx - 14 3/4" (375mm).
Weight - 157 grams.
Condition: Good. Signs of genuine age and wear, resulting in some very minor insect damage. No restoration. Fine natural colour and patina.
Internal Ref: CSA 1002
