Description

Attributed to Augustus Welby Northmore Pugin - possibly the work of John Hardman & Co. of Birmingham, UK - Circa 1850.
The vase is of sectional construction, formed from sheet brass and skilfully jointed. The enclosed quatrefoil base rises to incorporate a central baluster. The baluster flares upward in lobed form to create the upper quatrefoil rim at the opening.
The surface is embellished with complex copper 'cut-card' work - each applied element of copper further detailed with hand tooled engraving. The applied decoration incorporates repeating foliate trefoil motifs - typical of Pugin. One face of the baluster is embellished with a stylised gothic cross, the reverse incorporates the initials "MA" below a 'crown of thorns'. A second gothic cross motif is positioned above the crown.
The surface areas of brass have retained traces of the original selective gilding, (most evident to the foot - see images).
Size: height - 8 1/8" (216mm), max width, (rim) - 5 1/2" (140mm).
Weight: 529 grams.
Condition: Good. Minor surface marks and small bruises, (consistent with age and usage). Wear to the selective gilding, as stated. No repairs. Natural colour and patina.
Internal Ref: EA 1003
