Description

This fine example is constructed from two sections of sandalwood timber - the grip section neatly jointed at the shaft's upper extreme. The grip takes the form of a stylised lion head, (very much in the manner of the 'yaali' lion). The lion incorporates inset glass eyes - polished sections of silver form the eye pupils.

The slightly tapering solid form shaft is mounted with a silver ferrule at the base of the intricately carved upper extreme. The lower extreme is capped with the original 'full silver' enclosed ferrule - not steel tipped. Simple carved geometric decoration forms a band of embellishment at the base of the shaft, (above the silver tip).
Overall length - 38 3/8" (975mm).
Weight - 490 grams.
Condition: Very Good. Very minor shrinkage cracking to the shaft's upper carved work, (typical of sandalwood and not spoiling the appearance in any way). Surface marks etc. constant with age and usage. The silver tip shows little sign of wear, with no holes or reworking. Fine natural colour and patina.
Internal Ref: IHJB 1070
