Description

Hand constructed from high grade cast and beaten sheet silver*. This example is of shaped octagonal lozenge form - the sides tapering to the base panel.
Neatly closing over the opening to the box, the cover incorporates an inset silver panel - retained in position by a silver pin that passes through three integral lugs - the lugs passing through the cover face - see images. The panel is decorated with three embossed stylised floral motifs. Bands of tooled foliate scrollwork surround the central panel - finely applied copper and gold overlay further embellishes the cover face. Chiseled foliate and geometric decoration embellishes the tapering side panels of the box.
Internally, the box incorporates a shaped division.
A diamond shaped cartouche to the base is inscribed with calligraphy in a Persian farsi script - the inscription dated, Hijri 1272 (1855 Gregorian).
*Tested high grade silver.
Size: length - 5 1/4" (133mm), width - 2 5/8" (68mm), height - 2" (51mm).
Weight - 8.81 oz Troy, (274 grams).
Condition - Very Good. No repairs. The decoration remains 'sharp' & 'crisp'. Natural colour and patina.
