Description

An unusual Pyx* of small cylinder form, hand raised and worked from beaten high grade silver - the cover selectively gilded, or 'parcel' gilt. The conical cover 'press' mounts over a recessed collet type lip to the box opening - closing to a flush appearance. The cover incorporates a scalloped rim and central finial. The external surfaces are finished with chiseled bands and panels of floral scroll form decoration. Alternating triangular panels to the cover are parcel gilt.
*Pyx, (sometimes 'Pix' - a small round container used in the Catholic, Old Catholic and Anglican Churches to carry the consecrated host (Eucharist), to the sick or those otherwise unable to attend church in order to receive Holy Communion.
Size: diameter - 1 1/2" (38mm), max height - 1 13/16" 46mm).
Weight - 0.78oz Troy, 24.3 grams.
Condition: Very Good. Surface marks, consistent with genuine age. No repairs. Natural colour and patina.
